During Mardi Gras break I went to this night party. I went a little crazy, had a couple drinks, maybe danced little bit but nothing too crazy. Other than that, on Mardi Gras day, I really didn’t do much. I came back to Natchitoches and caught up on homework. I kept it chill this year and didn't overwhelm myself by doing too much. I just wanted to hang out with my friends for a little and then spend the rest of the time organizing myself.

My Mardi Gras was an incredibly sad day compared to the Mardi Gras of my friends and family back home. I spent it at work, because unfortunately Fat Tuesday does not stop people's need for chicken. I worked 13 hours, because no class meant more time to make money to pay my bills. I work as a trainer, which means I train every batch of new employees that come to work at the restaurant, kitchen and front of house. While I would have much rather be standing in a parade catching colorful beads, making money is not the worst thing to be doing. While others were having fun in the streets, I was teaching high schoolers how to count money and sweep. Hopefully, next year I will take off to spend some time down south catching some beads.

On the chilly and windy Fat Tuesday of 2024, I started my day out of town at my parents’ house. I knew I needed to be back to Natchitoches before 5 p.m. though, because the second day of my internship was today. Therefore, around the middle of the day, I packed my things up to go back to my apartment. While I was headed back, I contacted my friend Logan to make plans to hang out after I was finished. I got back just in time to get to my internship, which I was incredibly nervous about, but went perfectly fine. I followed that up with a trip to the gym, and then finally Logan came over so we could play our new horror game that we were on, “Outlast.” It wasn’t the standard Mardi Gras, but it was good enough.

Mardi Gras is a time of no excitement for me, simply because I don’t care for the festivities. The shouting for plastic beads you'll throw away a couple days later, the horrible color combination of yellow, purple and green is just something I don’t roll with. I wish I could love Mardi Gras but it just isn't the holiday for me. I worked instead and took time to myself to get things done around the house. From dusting the cobwebs in the corner of my room, to checking out a 43 year old lady, who “could just die” for this quilt. I took that time as a break filled with rest: easing my mind, body and brain that I've been using with school. It felt good and was a much needed break.

Mardi Gras is one of my favorite holidays. Mardi Gras is so much fun because it's a time when everyone can let loose and embrace the spirit of celebration. Being at parades and connecting with others who are out to have a good time just like you are so amazing. In a way it’s like you’re reconnecting with family from all over the world. It's a time when the streets burst with the energy of colorful parades, lively music, and the joyous gathering of friends and strangers alike. It’s a unique experience that captures the spirit of togetherness and the essence of joy. Whether you're catching beads, dancing in the streets, or simply soaking up the festive atmosphere, Mardi Gras is all about having a blast with friends and creating unforgettable memories.

Mardi Gras in Pointe Coupee Parish, for me, starts on a Sunday morning and ends on a Tuesday evening. On Sunday, before Fat Tuesday, the city of Livonia prepares for its annual parade. However, for my family, Mardi Gras is the perfect opportunity for a block party filled with food, music, drinks, and king cake! We have our music blaring as we stuff our faces while dancing in the street eagerly waiting for the floats to arrive. “Look y’all the parade is coming,” exclaimed my younger cousin as she saw the lights flashing in the distance. As the floats pass we laugh and cheer “Throw me something,” all in the spirit of Mardi Gras.

My Mardi Gras plans never left the group chat between my friends and I, per usual. Instead of dancing our way down the busy street of Bourbon and losing our voices as we scream for beads from extravagant floats, we all spent our Mardi Gras working. The most exciting thing I’ve done over break is starting a 5 a.m. fitness journey. My best friend and I have decided to get more serious about our health. The soreness nearly took us out, but we’ve been powering through!

I spent my Mardi Gras like many of my peers, with a drink in my hand. The only difference, however, is that I was on a beach in Mexico. My family is from the coast of North Carolina, where Mardi Gras is barely heard of, much less celebrated. Since we do not observe the holiday in the same way most southerners do, we usually take the extra days off to take a family vacation. This year, it was a cruise to Mexico. This yearly trip has become one of my favorite family traditions and has created some of my best memories.
